Statue of Redemeer - the Christ - Maratea

The Christ of Maratea. He is not only a spiritual guide.

christ maratea

Situated in the ancient Maratea Superior, also known as Castle, a work by the Florentine sculptor Bruno Innocenti (Florence 1906-1986) and commissioned by Count Stefano Rivetti di Valcervo, the Christ the Redeemer statue of Maratea was erected in 1965 on the summit of Mount San Biagio where a commemorative stone cross had stood.
For more information on the realization of the Statue and on the author B. Innocenti, we suggest reading the interesting work by Prof. Biagio Limongi "THE CHRIST THE REDEEMER OF BRUNO INNOCENTI", MTS Editions, 2025

The Numbers of the Christ of Maratea

Second in size only to Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Maratea’s statue stands 21 metres tall, with an arm span of 19 metres and a face measuring 3 metres.
The statue is made of reinforced concrete coated with a mixture of white cement and Carrara marble.

Due to the particular configuration of the face, the statue, an unmistakable point of reference for seafarers, gives the impression to a distant observer that it is looking, contrary to reality, towards the sea.

The statue features an internal technical void useful for reaching the top for maintenance work, with a non-usable iron ladder for tourist purposes.

The belvedere at the base of the statue is the most panoramic point in all of Maratea's territory, offering an exceptional 360° view of the coastline's magical profile and the inner mountains.

The motorway to reach the mountain's peak is highly spectacular, with final winding turns that rest on pillars several meters high.

In the summer, due to the strong tourist influx, car access is limited to a parking lot just a few hundred meters from the peak, called Madonna degli Ulivi, from where a shuttle service takes visitors to the Basilica of San Biagio and the Christ statue.

The Statue and the Basilica

The statue stands directly opposite the Sanctuary of San Biagio (Saint Blaise), the Armenian martyr and patron saint of Maratea, whose relics have been kept in the basilica since AD 732

The Basilica is open for visit with the proper decorum of a place of prayer throughout the day except during the times when sacred functions are held.
Along the pedestrian path slightly uphill that leads from the Basilica to the Statue, one passes through the ruins of the old Maratea Castle, levelled to the ground by the French after its surrender following a long siege in December 1806.

The entire route and the two belvedere, of the Basilica and the Statue, are ideal places to take photographs of the beautiful panorama of Maratea.
For shopping there are local craft shops and a Bar restaurant.

The most memorable time to visit the Castle Village is during the days of the Feast of St. Blaise; for the romantics, walks at sunset or dawn in the vivid light of June are particularly suggestive...
