St. Caterina - the Castle of Maratea

the ancient Maratea

Castle of Maratea

The Castle of Maratea, located at the top of Monte San Biagio, is the highest inhabited area (644 m above sea level) in Maratea and is characterized by the ruins of the fortified core of houses (known as the Castle), constituting "Maratia Superior," which was later abandoned in favor of the current historic center.

See the Sanctuary of Saint Blaise and the statue of the Christ the Redeemer.

In the area, there is also the interesting Angel Cave (recommended for experts only), and since 2021, there is a via ferrata for climbing the cliff below the Christ statue.

Just a few dozen meters below, on the southern side of Monte San Biagio, lies the village of Santa Caterina, which since the late 1980s has seen an exponential development in the presence of tourist accommodation facilities, becoming in fact, in terms of occupancy, one of Maratea's hotel hubs.
