Porticello Beach

The beach Portacquafridda is nicknamed by the inhabitants of Acquafredda the Porticello, as it overlooks like a harbor on a well-protected bay from marine currents.
On July 4, 1848, this beach was the scene of the landing of the patriot Costabile Carducci, attacked and killed by legitimists pro-Bourbon and buried in the church of Acquafredda.
Set in a splendid natural setting, above the beach opens the mouth of the beautiful Dragon cave, the largest natural cavity ever explored in Basilicata.
Near the cave there are the characteristic bushes of critano, the "sea salad" of which the elders of Acquafredda often speak, recalling when it was used as a spice.
Among the rocks of this beach toward the Marizza beach is a source of fresh water, pure and very cold, which gave its name to the village: Acquafredda = cold water.
