The AMO Maratea Manifesto

I LOVE Maratea

AMO is a verb: “I love”.
It is a choice.
It is an act of care for what begins in fragility and grows into a vision.

AMO is an object.
It is the fisherman’s hook: small, patient, as old as the sea.
It catches not fish, but the eye.
It does not hold, but reveals.

AMO is a place.
A workshop that was once a carpenter’s shop.
Matter becoming image.
Wood becoming light.
Silence becoming story.

Here art is not just displayed.
It is experienced.
It is listened to.
It is lived.

Here matter dialogues with light,
image meets sound,
the viewer enters the work
not as a guest, but as a necessary part.

AMO is love for the territory.
It is listening to the sea, the wind, the mountain.
It is respect for what endures.
It is attention to what is born.

We are not a gallery.
We are not a museum.
We are a place where things happen.

AMO does not measure value in frames.
But in heartbeats.

Here one comes to look.
And one ends up seeing.

THEA MARIS RETURN TO THE ORIGIN (until August 27, 2025)

THEA MARIS

THEA MARIS – RETURN TO THE SOURCE
Resonances of the sea between infinity and abyss
by Anna Caterina Masotti

An exhibition as a tool for perception
Curated by Laura Frasca – Art Manager

Thea Maris is not just an exhibition, but a sensory and intellectual experience that invites reflection on the inseparable bond between nature and humanity.

"Thea Maris" is a widely circulated photographic exhibition that transforms Maratea into a stage of images, light, myth, and memory. At the heart of the project, the sea becomes a symbol of beauty, maternity, and transformation, with references to Aphrodite and generational bonds. The works – photographs printed on silk and chiffon, embroidered with gold and bronze threads – are not merely images but sensory experiences that invite contemplation, dialogue between light and matter, the visible and the invisible.

The approach is multidisciplinary and psychological: the exhibition stimulates visual perception following the principles of Gestalt psychology, amplifying the tension between form and void, surface and depth.

Spaces and meanings

The works are exhibited in various symbolic locations in Maratea, each enriching the message of the exhibition:

  • Palazzo De Lieto: a place of historical and archaeological memory, where images converse with Roman anchors and marine myths, in a bond between past, beauty, and rebirth.
  • AltriTurismi Workshops in Officina at Maratea - AMO Maratea: a carpentry that becomes a gallery, synthesis between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art.
  • Church of the Immaculate: the transparency of the fabrics blends with the stucco and majolica, evoking introspection and spirituality.
  • Church of Saint Francis: hosts a single symbolic image – a hand offering flowers and a golden bee – metaphor of care, gift, and continuity between nature and sacredness.
  • Church of Porto Salvo: nautical frame for small works inspired by seashells, corals, and jellyfish, reviving the devotional tradition of the fishing community.

The heart of the project

Born from a personal and generational experience, Thea Maris is also an expression of love between mother and daughter, and between the artist and the landscape of her birthplace. Masotti weaves together past and present through a female figure in transformation, evoking a modern-day Aphrodite. The sea, envisioned as a primordial womb and amniotic fluid, becomes both the backdrop and the regenerative force of the entire narrative.

The embroidered, layered works invite viewers to engage actively: each image is a perceptual threshold connecting art, place and emotional experience. Their aesthetic rests on the harmony of contrasts — light and shadow, softness and roughness — offering a vision of beauty understood not as perfection, but as a conscious embrace of life.
