Madonna del Carmine | Church | MASSA
The church dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patron saint of Massa di Maratea, was built through the efforts of the local Workers’ Mutual Aid Society. Founded in 1881 and based in the village, it was one of the few workers’ associations in Basilicata.
It was consecrated on July 16, 1931, with the same dedication as the original patronal chapel, located nearby, in the presence of the bishop of Policastro, monsignor Pezzullo, after four years of work.

Works of art in the Church
The facade was originally designed with two side bell towers beneath the tympanum, but today it features a clock in the center surrounded by small bell towers.
The interior, with a single nave punctuated by arches that serve as small lateral chapels, features a nineteenth-century Art Nouveau decoration that echoes the Romanesque style of the late nineteenth century.
Notable is the painting of Our Lady of Carmel placed above the entrance, as well as the polychrome papier-mâché statue of St. Michael the Archangel.
Above the main altar, in white marble mixed with polychrome marbles, there is a copy of the original Madonna del Carmine statue from 1932, which is preserved in the sacristy, and two paintings, one depicting St. Blaise and the other St. Dominic of Gusman.
