National Park
Lucanian Apennines Val d'Agri Lagonegrese

The Val d'Agri Park. The youngest National Park in Italy

APPENNINO VAL D'AGRI PARK

The Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese National Park is the most recently established Italian national park (2007) and thus the youngest, covering an area of approximately 69,000 hectares, all within the province of Potenza, of which at least half is covered by forests.

The park's boundaries touch those of the municipal territory of Maratea to the south and encompass the Upper Val d'Agri, Val Camastra, Upper Valle del Melandro, and Lagonegrese.
The National Park of the Lucanian Apennines roughly includes the course of the middle-upper Agri River, from the border with the province of Salerno to the plain around the Pietra del Pertusillo dam, with typical mountain landscapes covered with extensive beech forests and majestic oak groves.

Then the medium mountain areas of Tramutola and Moliterno covered with chestnut groves, and those more gently rolling hills of Montemurro covered with olive groves and vineyards.

To the northern extremes, the Sellata massif, and to the south, that of Monte Sirino; both are sites of ski resorts.

The Most Protected Area in Italy

APPENINE PROTECTED AREA

With the establishment of the National Park APPENNINO LUCANO VAL D'AGRI AND LAGONEGRESE, the area corresponding to ancient Lucania, with the Pollino National Park and that of Cilento, becomes one of the most protected regions on the planet.

The Park has incorporated the former Regional Reserves of the Abetina of Laurenzana, covering approximately 330 hectares, which protects the most significant site of white fir in the Southern Apennines, with specimens of about 4 meters in average circumference, and the Lake Laudemio, the most southerly glacial basin in Europe, which is home to a ski resort and is commonly recognized as one of the most beautiful lakes in Basilicata for its vegetation and clear waters.
